North Texas has begun to form its own unique creative identity, and Judge Roy Scream is one of its defining examples — an alternative/neo-psychedelic rock project built around the voice, songs, and restless multi-instrumental hands of Marshall Stubbs.
The story starts in 2019 when Stubbs began recording his first album under a different name, different form, but same substance. Though expressing different styles since then, his fascination with drone, psychedelic textures, and meditative soundscapes has remained throughout. After high school, that fascination found its latest form, which led to the writing and production of Judge Roy Scream’s debut album.
Their Enchanted Majesties is the result — eight songs built from the bones of art rock, indie, post-punk, psychedelic rock, and drone, then re-animated into something that doesn’t quite sit still in any one era. Made entirely independent, without outside hands shaping it, the album treats familiar sounds like raw material. The washed out guitar tones are pulled back to earth by the seismic, yet steady rhythm section. Stubbs’ expressive vocals surround you as it creates an atmosphere for the other instruments to reside. It’s rock music aimed forward, built by someone who’d much rather blur a genre line than color inside it.
